Source:

The holidays are a time when we get together with family and close friends to celebrate, share and reflect. During these special occasions, it is not uncommon to eat more food than what we are normally accustomed to. I mean, who can resist the mouth-watering chocolate cake that grandma always make, the succulent roast beef , or the delectable devil eggs? Who is not tempted by the wonderful treats constantly in our sense of sight and our sense of smell? The simple fact of the matter is that food is an important part of many holidays, celebrations, family and cultural traditions. It is, however, still possible to have a joyous holiday and avoid the typical emotional rollercoaster in your attempt to stay on target with your weight reduction goals.

Here are 4 simple yet very effective strategies you can use to fully enjoy the holidays without feeling the weight of regret!

  • 1. Reduce your daily caloric intake the day before the holiday meal by 100-250 calories;
  • 2. Reduce your daily caloric intake the day after the holiday meal by 100-250 calories;
  • 3. Drink plenty of water during throughout the day to reduce the tendency to overeat at your meals;
  • 4. Make time to get at least 30 minutes of exercise the day before, the day of and the day after; this can be a simple as taking a brisk walk.

Be sure to maintain perspective. Overeating one day won't make or break your eating plan. If you over-indulge at a holiday meal, put it behind you. Return to your usual eating plan the next day without guilt or despair.
