Whether it is the ACE http://www.acefitness.org/, US DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services) http://www.hhs.gov/, your doctor or tons of other health and fitness mags, TV shows and personalities, we are told over and over again of the importance of exercising. Despite this plethora of information, and one might say overload of information, far to many of us do not exercise. Consider the facts:

According to the CDC, Center for Disease Control, http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm

· 67% of noninstitutionalized adults age 20 years and over who are overweight or obese;

· 34% of noninstitutionalized adults age 20 years and over who are obese;

· 18% of adolescents age 12-19 years who are overweight:

· 15% of children age 6-11 years who are overweight:

· 11% of children age 2-5 years who are overweight:

While this is the case, at least according to the CDC, almost 2/3 of Americans meet exercise guidelines according to an article posted December 4, 2008 at http://health.usnews.com/articles/health/healthday/2008/12/04/almost-two-thirds-of-americans-meet-exercise.html.......

To me this does not make sense; how can nearly 2/3 of Americans be overweight or obese and yet 2/3 of Americans meet the exercise guidelines?  This conflicting source of information might possibly be explained by saying that either the respondant to the surveys were not forthright in their answers or the guidelines for exercising is not sufficient to effect weight loss.

Yesterday I also read an article entitled “Top 10 Reasons You Don’t Work Out”. Click this link to access the article http://exercise.about.com/cs/fittingitin/a/exerciseobstacl.htm . Here I will list the reasons beginning with the top reason:

  1. You don’t have time
  2. You can’t make the commitment to stick to an exercise routine
  3. Exercise Hurts.
  4. You can’t seem to stay motivated to continue working out
  5. You want to exercise but you have to take care of your family
  6. You don’t know how to exercise
  7. You are not seeing any changes in your body
  8. You can’t afford a gym membership
  9. You have tried to exercise but you keep quitting
  10. You really hate to exercise

We took a poll from our readers from July 2009 to September 2009 to gauge the frequently of exercising, what we found was that roughly 63% of respondants either did not exercise or exercised only 1 time weekly. We decide to further gauge our readers to see if their reasons for not exercising matched up with the claims of the author of the above mentioned article “Top 10 Reasons You Don’t Work Out”. We will run this poll for 2 months. Afterwards we will write posts and articles on our findings that will hopefully serve as a source of inspiration and motivation to those traveling the weightloss and/or fitness journey.

Click the link: monthly poll; do assist us in the process by taking the poll. Thanks for your cooperation.
